Need an effective way to relay complex ideas and business cases? To inspire people to make a change — and convince management to support it? Might there be a more effective way to elicit requirements than using questions? If you continue to do what you’ve always done, you won’t get different results. Choose instead to follow the lead of organizations like Proctor & Gamble, NASA, Levi Strauss, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, the American Legion Auxiliary, Hewlett-Packard and hundreds of others throughout the world, both large and small. They employ a variety of story techniques — evoking stories from others through prompts and triggers, listening to these stories in a unique fashion to uncover the meaning hidden in the narrative, and finding, crafting and telling compelling personal and organizational stories — to accomplish these outcomes. Learn how using these techniques can benefit you and your interactions with stakeholders throughout the organization.
At the end of the session, participants will learn:
1. How story differs from examples, descriptions, case studies, and anecdotes and what makes them more powerful than these other forms of narrative
2. How to effectively elicit stories from others that will get you the information you need to move forward in your work.
3. How to listen to stories to uncover the meaning hidden in them.
4. The traditional framework for constructing a story.
About the Speaker
In 2003, Lori Silverman found herself on radio and TV shows promoting the book, Stories Trainers Tell. Each time she was interviewed, the hosts kept asking the same question: “Can story be used for more than training?” That’s when she realized little research had been done in the field of business storytelling. This gap motivated her to spend the next three years writing Wake Me Up When the Data Is Over, a book that highlights 81 applications of storytelling in a myriad of business functions. But she didn’t stop there. When the Dummies series came calling in 2013, she once again put pen to paper and churned out her third bestseller on the subject with Karen Dietz.
When Lori’s not writing or speaking across North America and the UK, she helps firms navigate through large, messy, complex organizational changes and develop and implement long-range breakthrough strategies to catapult growth. Since 1991, she’s worked with organizations across 25 industries, including Chevron, Target, Bechtel, the Midwest Energy Association, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Valmet, Lucent, Children’s Hospital and Clinics of MN, American Family Insurance, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
